The gift commemorates Charles Belt’s pioneering contributions to understanding the
hazards of constricting rivers through the construction of levees, the harm that levees
cause the natural ecosystems of flood plains, and the hazards levees pose to those whose livelihoods depend on flood plains. We wish to thank Louise Belt and her
family for the generous gift to establish the Belt Laboratory for River and
Flood Plain Hazards in the Center for
Environmental Sciences at St Louis
University.
The ceremony for the establishment of The Dr. Charles Banks Belt, Jr.
Laboratory for River Systems
and Flood Hazards was held on September 18, 2007 in the center. Univeristy administratives, Members of the Belt family, faculty members from the Department of Earth & Atmospheric Sciences and the Department of Biology participated in the ceremony.
