Center for Environmental Sciences has developed research and educational partnership with industry leaders in geospatial arena including ITT Visual Information Solutions (ITT VIS). Under the program, ITT has provided the CES with a number of educational benefits, including licenses of the company’s industry-leading software products ($500,000.00 value) for image and data analysis for use in classroom instruction. The CES will make advanced image and data analysis technology readily available to students and faculty at campus, and beyond, and provide curriculum, research and papers, and other resources of value to others in the academic community.

ITT Geospatial Innovation Center hosted in the Center for Environmental Sciences – a consortium of scholars from different disciplines including earth and atmospheric sciences, biology, chemistry, public health, public policy, medicine, law, business andeconomics at Saint Louis University andbeyond, provides students with quality education and training in remote sensing and GIS, and public, other governmental, non-governmental organizations with consultant services.

Dedicated full-time faculty, post docs and research staff with long-term experience in various fields of remote sensing (Optical, Thermal, LiDAR, and Microwave) and both GIS tool development and applications deliver world-class research and educational environment. Our expertise includes:

Developing web GIS, Enterprise databases, and interactive GIS tools

webmapsWe have received ever growing interest on recent technology trends in GIS including enterprise database development, web GIS, and developing GIS tools that is seamlessly integrated with other scientific modeling tools from various departments at campus and organizations outside campus. We are capable of building robust shared framework that integrates data from multiple disconnected sources, and delivers comprehensive GIS solutions through a wide variety of clients and client platforms. We have also in-depth experience developing intuitive and interactive GIS tools that enable our research partners, governments, nonprofits, and community groups, shares their data in managed, secured database systems, and access, edit and update their data from remote locations using internet or mobile network in automated or semi-automated way.

mobilGISDynamic GIS

Incorporating the temporal element into traditional GIS is particularly important to dynamically track an event and visualize the progress. Mobile GIS based on wireless technology makes organizations and their mobile workforce even more efficient and productive. We use dynamic GIS to model and track event developments through time, e.g., wild fire propagation, flooding, and dynamically manage, update and edit our relational databases using field GPS collections, satellite data and analysis.

InSAR/DInSAR Techniques With its greater penetration capability over clouds,canopies and dry bare soils, PALSAR Interferometry over Sichuan Earthquakemicrowave remote sensing plays an important role in environmental studies, change detection, tracking the moving target and measuring its velocity. We have an active research team specialized in InSAR/DInSAR techniques working in measuring earthquake surface deformation,  environmental site assessments for real-estate transfers/sinking, the impact of long-term production of oil and gas or injection well operations, environmental hazard investigations of growth faults in urban areas, landslides, subsidence, etc.

Interdisciplinary Research We have also been actively involved in research of diverse topics such as identifying precious mineral resources, groundwater exploration, developing techniques to detect spatial and temporal patterns of variation in tree species by integrating population genetics, environmental niche characterization, and remote sensing, conservation planning, urban management, habitat quality & diversity mapping, developing GIS based relational databases and 3D visualization and online analysis tools for certain fish species, etc.

Quantitative Remote Sensing We work on the retrieval of various surface bio/geophysical variables such as soil moisture, leaf water content and, developing methods that are key inputs for interdisciplinary studies including global climate change.

Pattern Recognition and Artificial Intelligence We develop tools used for feature extraction, and use neural networks to indentify information automatically from satellite images.
