The gift commemorates Charles Belt’s pioneering contributions to understanding the hazards of constricting rivers through the construction of levees, the harm that levees cause the natural ecosystems of flood plains, and the hazards levees pose to those whose livelihoods depend on flood plains. We wish to thank Louise Belt and her family for the generous gift to establish the Belt Laboratory for River and Flood Plain Hazards in the Center for Environmental Sciences at St Louis University.
